“Muskwa’s Blanket” was inspired by historical dog blankets (tuppies) found in the Manitoba Museum HBC collections. Dog blankets were designed for sled dog teams as early as the 18th century and made of wool, velveteen, and moose hide, and were adorned with elaborate floral beadwork, silk embroidery, wool fringe, silk ribbons, pompoms and bells. They were made for show and prestige rather than warmth, and placed on the dog team announcing their arrival by the sound of the bells. Historically tuppies were often made in sets of four or six to decorate an entire team and they represented deep respect for the dogs and their service.

Muskwa, my red fox Labrador, was my inspiration to learn how to make an historical dog blanket. Bringing him  home was special and I wanted to honour him with his own blanket. I designed the blanket specifically for him with colours to compliment his gorgeous red fox colour. I am forever grateful for my teachers, the historical dog blankets in the HBC collections at the Manitoba Museum.

In 2024 l was juried into the 102 Santa Fe Indian Market, New Mexico, the largest and most prestigious native market in the world.

“Muskwa’s Blanket” was entered into this prestigious juried competition and I was delighted that his blanket received an award in one of the beadwork categories.

Muskwa looks amazingly handsome wearing his blanket.
